I was at a conference a couple of weeks ago where we discussed airline regulations. One of the more interesting points was that the airline industry, taken as a whole, has lost money every year but one (1998) in the last THIRTY. The old giants are inefficient relics of the regulation era and repeatedly go bankrupt, only to be exhumed by a combination of taxpayer dollars and new investors. Never learning from their mistakes or significantly altering their business model, they fall into the same debilitating financial straits until they require another round of bankruptcy. Wash, rinse, repeat.
