I like this post. Don't agree with it's ultimate conclusion (I'm voting for Barr) but I dig the overarching-historical approach. Keep it up.

<em>NickyCheese's last blog post..<a href='http://nickycheese.blogivists.com/2008/11/02/gotv-acorn-walnut-style-2/' rel="nofollow">GOTV ACORN WALNUT-style</a></em>

Thanks for your comments, George, but I hope I haven't ignored anything. Property rights existed before governments, and we wouldn't need national defense if we didn't have nations. I recommend reading The Ethics of Liberty, by Murray Rothbard.

You are ignoring the proper functions of government, like national defense and the enforcement of contracts. When we strip it of all its regulatory infringements, we realize that government is a positive force for good that makes property rights possible.

You know, recently I've been feeling the exact same way. I used to think that we needed government to provide regulation, large infrastructural projects, and limited welfare, among other things. But now, I realize no. Markets self-regulate. Infrastructure (especially the large stuff [think MN bridge]) should never be handled by gov. And welfare? Private charity provides. Proof? Homeless men and women are rarely hungry.

Ugh. This is such a sad story and an apt comparison to Waco. I actually just saw the film Waco: The Rules of Engagement. Great film; check it out if you haven't already.

Great post. I had the exact same conversation the other day. The constitution is becoming more and more subservient to new state and federal laws every day. These are sad times.

I was at a conference a couple of weeks ago where we discussed airline regulations. One of the more interesting points was that the airline industry, taken as a whole, has lost money every year but one (1998) in the last THIRTY. The old giants are inefficient relics of the regulation era and repeatedly go bankrupt, only to be exhumed by a combination of taxpayer dollars and new investors. Never learning from their mistakes or significantly altering their business model, they fall into the same debilitating financial straits until they require another round of bankruptcy. Wash, rinse, repeat.
